John S. Summery, husband of Narcissia Shepherd Summey.
According to Lillie Barnette in The Henderson County Heritage Book, Volume 1, “John S. Summey born 15 March 1837, was the son of John S. Summey and Sarah Huffistettler Summey. They were both of Dutch ancestry. He joined the Confederate Army 15 May 1861 at age twenty-four years, and was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was a prisoner of war during the last few weeks of his service, and was released at Point Lookout, Virginia on 19 June 1865. He and other soldiers walked home from Appomatox. When he reached home he was in a very bad condition. During the war service he married Narcissia Shepherd, who was the daughter of Abner and Susan Barnette Shepherd. They bought a large tract of land lying along Willow Road which included what is now known as Boley’s Knob. He later built a house on Willow Road, which is occupied by a grandson and his family.”
