Pleasant Hill Cemetery History

The first burial in what is now known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery is believed to be Sarah Elizabeth Barton Drake who died during the civil war around 1865. She is the wife of Hezekiah Drake. The land where the cemetery is located was originally owned by the Drake family and was once known as the Drake cemetery.  The community was first known as Delmont and later as Pleasant Hill, which was the name of the nearby 1839 summer estate of William Johnstone (a South Carolina Rice Planter). The Johnstone Pleasant Hill Estate was adjacent to his father’s Beaumont Estate.

The land was largely donated by the Drake family. There are up to six generations of Drake family members buried in the cemetery. The cemetery now contains the graves of many families that lived in this community.

Three donors legally transferred land parcels to Pleasant Hill Cemetery trustees which now constitute the 2.86 acre Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

1st transfer of about 1-1/2 acres was recorded in 1889 and given by A. F. Drake (son of James Drake).  This was part of a larger tract purchased by him from his siblings as part of the estate of James Drake.
2nd transfer was recorded in 1924 given by F. C. & Annie Abbott consisting of about 1/2 acre north of the first burials in the cemetery.  The Abbotts acquired this land from John Tyler Drake.
3rd transfer was recorded in 1949 given by James C. and Jeannie Smoot of less than 1/2 acre being triangular shape at the south end of the cemetery.

Title for the cemetery was transferred to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association in 2016.

Pleasant Hill Community

According to the book “Postmarks” by Lenoir Ray, the Pleasant Hill Community was known as Delmont. It had a post office that was established on July 20, 1881. At some point the name was changed and is today called Pleasant Hill. According to Ray the name Pleasant Hill was derived from “Pleasant Hill” the estate of William Johnstone, son of Andrew Johnstone who built Beaumont. William built Pleasant Hill in 1839 and sold it to Dr. Means in 1858.
