Elizabeth’s husband Daniel was killed in 1864 he was a Union soldier he is buried in Pisgah Methodist Church Cemetery in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He was in Union Company B (and later H) of the 2nd NC Mounted Infantry (source – descendant of this family).
James D. Gilbert was Elizabeth’s son with whom she made her home after her husband’s death (source – descendant of this family)
According to Elaine Gilbert Frost in The Heritage of Henderson County, Volume II, in an article about The Reverend Robert Maxwell Gilbert says “The Reverend Robert M. Gilbert (14 July 1847 – 31 January 1928) was living in Henderson County by 1860 with his parents Daniel (circa 1825) and Elizabeth Maxwell Gilbert (10 January 1827 – 15 December 1903). Elizabeth Maxwell Gilbert’s mother was a Strickland and of German descent. Daniel Gilbert’s brother Joseph Gilbert, was a doctor in Polk County. Daniel Gilbert was in the Union Army, Company H, 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Mounted Infantry and was killed by the enemy at South Hominy Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina 17 June 1864. He is believed to have been buried at a cemetery near Candler.”
