LATEST NEWS FOR PLEASANT HILL CEMETERY

A critical tree situation was recently resolved at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  Two trees which bordered the cemetery property next to Old Kanuga Road were dying and at risk of falling.  They posed a dangerous threat to drivers and the power lines on Old Kanuga Road.  If they had fallen on the cemetery, they would have caused extensive damage to monuments and burial sites. Read more and see photos

Cemetery History

The first burial in what is now known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery is believed to be Sarah Elizabeth Barton Drake who died during the civil war around 1865. She is the wife of Hezekiah Drake. The land where the cemetery is located was originally owned by the Drake family and was once known as the Drake cemetery.  The community was first known as Delmont and later as Pleasant Hill, which was the name of the nearby 1839 Summer Estate of William Johnstone (a South Carolina Rice Planter). The Johnstone Pleasant Hill Estate was adjacent to his father’s Beaumont Estate. Read more:
